Food for Thought
Students participating in the ACP are looking for opportunities that will allow them to explore careers, industries, and occupations. Some of them are looking to solidify their interests, others are looking to clarify their interests. The experience you provide to them can truly open their minds to possible career options as you empower them through the job shadowing experience.
Building an Experience
- Start by asking the student what their expectations are for the experience. While many students may not know how to answer this question, it can begin a dialogue about job shadowing options.
- If contacted by a student, respond in a timely manner, even if to say you are no longer available. Students take this experience seriously, and take it personally if an alumnus does not respond to them.
- Stay in touch with your student during the planning process as much as you can.
- Panel with various department representatives (if you have more than one student visiting).
- Meet and greet with various department representatives.
- One-on-one lunch with student(s).
- Organized lunch with Cornellians at your organization.
- Tour of your organization.
- Student sits in on conference call, client meeting, staff meeting, etc.

- What is the best part of your industry/job/employer?
- What is important for students to understand about your industry/job/employer?
- How many Cornellians work with you?
- How much time are you able to spend with your student?
- What do you wish you knew before you started your career?
